Heartworm prevention is a mainstay of veterinary medicine. We recommended a once month oral medication to help prevent infection with heartworm disease. Heartworm disease is carried by mosquitoes that transmit the worms, dirofilaria immitis, when taking a blood meal from a dog or cat. Symptoms of heartworm disease range from no outward clinical signs, to mild coughing and exercise intolerance, to severe coughing, labored breathing, swollen belly, and collapse form progressive heart failure.
We recommend an annual heartworm test to ensure your furry loved one tests negative. In the event of a positive heartworm test, we will walk you through the diagnostic steps and treatment recommendations. Heartworm prevention is recommended year round to make certain there are no gaps in your pet’s protection.
